Why 20 KB?

A 20 KB cap is about as tight as image upload limits get, and it almost always comes from an older government or examination portal built when bandwidth was scarce. Reaching it from a modern phone photo is not a matter of nudging a quality slider: a 12 MP image physically cannot hold that much detail in 20 KB at full resolution, so the dimensions have to come down as well. We search quality and scale together, and tell you exactly what the final image ended up as.

Where this limit comes up

  • Government exam registration portals, which frequently cap photo and signature uploads at 20 KB
  • Older recruitment systems built against dial-up-era limits and never updated
  • Signature upload fields, usually the tightest limit on any form
  • Legacy public-sector portals that reject larger files without explaining why

What the portals actually require

These numbers come from each exam's own official notice — the actual PDF, not other websites, which often get them wrong. The link to the source and the date we checked it are shown under each table.

SSC CGL (and SSC exams on the same portal)2026

SSC no longer asks you to upload a photo. The form takes your photo live, with your camera, while you fill it in. Pointing the camera at an old photo gets the form rejected. The only image file you upload is your signature.

SignatureJPEG/JPG10–20 KB~6.0 × 2.0 cmBlurred or very small signatures are rejected. Different parts of the same notice give slightly different sizes (6 cm and 4 cm wide), so do not chase exact centimetres — just keep the signature big and clear.

SSC GD Constable2026 (2027 notice expected Sept 2026 — docs/18)

GD has NO photo upload. The form takes your photo live, with your camera. Pointing the camera at an old photo gets the form rejected. The only file you upload is your signature — and the notice itself says most rejected signatures are rejected for being TOO SMALL, so do not squeeze the file below 10 KB.

SignatureJPEG/JPG10–20 KB~6.0 × 2.0 cm @ 300 DPIKeep it horizontal. The notice says blurred or very small ("miniature") signatures are rejected — and names "too small" as the number one reason.

SBI (PO / Clerk / CBO — recruitments on the same portal)2025-26 (CBO Nov 2025 guidelines)

SBI uses the same four uploads as IBPS: a photo, a signature, a left thumb impression, and a short declaration written by hand in English. The signature and the declaration must NOT be in capital letters.

IBPS (and bank recruitments on the same portal)2026

IBPS (the body that runs bank recruitment exams) wants FOUR separate uploads, each with its own size range: a photo, a signature, a left thumb impression, and a short declaration written by hand in English. A signature written in CAPITAL LETTERS is not accepted.

How the exact size is reached

Most tools give you a quality slider and leave you to guess. We search instead: encode, measure, adjust, repeat — usually landing within three passes and never more than eight. The result is accepted once it sits between 92% and 100% of your target, so you get a file that is comfortably under the limit rather than one balanced exactly on it.

When quality alone cannot get there — and for the smallest targets it cannot — the image dimensions are reduced as well, and you are told exactly what the final size became. A target that is genuinely unreachable returns the closest result we managed, clearly labelled, rather than a silent failure or an oversized file.

Frequently asked questions

Can any photo actually reach 20KB?

Not at full resolution. A 12 MP photo holds far too much detail to fit in 20 KB while keeping its dimensions, so reaching this target means reducing pixel size as well as quality. We do both automatically and report the final dimensions, so you know exactly what you are submitting.

Will it still look acceptable?

For a passport-style headshot or a signature at the size these forms display them, usually yes. For a detailed landscape, no — 20 KB is simply not enough information to hold one. If the form accepts a larger limit, use it.

What if my photo cannot reach the target?

You get the closest result we can produce, clearly labelled, plus a one-tap option to allow resizing so it can go further. You never get a silent failure or a file that quietly exceeds the limit. Physics applies: a 12 MP photo cannot become 20 KB at full resolution, so very small targets mean reducing the dimensions too.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The compression runs entirely inside your browser, so your files never leave your device. You can check that yourself in your browser’s Network tab, and the page keeps working with your network disconnected.

Nothing is uploaded — and you can check

Conversion happens on your own device, inside this browser tab. There is no server to receive your files, which is a stronger guarantee than a promise not to look at them. Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and convert something: you will see no request carrying your image. The page keeps working with your network disconnected.
