Why 50 KB?
Fifty kilobytes is the classic passport and visa photo limit. It is tight enough that a phone photo will not pass unedited, but generous enough that a properly cropped headshot still looks sharp — which is why so many identity systems settled on it. The usual mistake is cropping after compressing: crop to the required aspect ratio first, so none of your 50 KB is spent on background you were about to discard.

What the portals actually require
These numbers come from each exam's own official notice — the actual PDF, not other websites, which often get them wrong. The link to the source and the date we checked it are shown under each table.
UPSC Civil Services (and exams on the UPSC OTR portal)2026
UPSC asks for BOTH: an uploaded photo AND a live photo taken with your camera. The two are compared — if they do not match, the form will not go through. And the signature upload is not one signature: you sign THREE times, one below the other, in a single image.

RRB NTPC (Railway non-technical posts)CEN 07/2025 (Undergraduate)
RRB has NO photo upload. The form takes your photo live, with your camera, while you fill it in — taking a picture of an old printed photo gets the form rejected. The only image file you upload is your signature. Note the size is higher than most exams: 30 to 49 KB, not 10–20 KB. Sign in normal running handwriting — block or CAPITAL letters are rejected.

SBI uses the same four uploads as IBPS: a photo, a signature, a left thumb impression, and a short declaration written by hand in English. The signature and the declaration must NOT be in capital letters.

IBPS (and bank recruitments on the same portal)2026
IBPS (the body that runs bank recruitment exams) wants FOUR separate uploads, each with its own size range: a photo, a signature, a left thumb impression, and a short declaration written by hand in English. A signature written in CAPITAL LETTERS is not accepted.

How the exact size is reached
Most tools give you a quality slider and leave you to guess. We search instead: encode, measure, adjust, repeat — usually landing within three passes and never more than eight. The result is accepted once it sits between 92% and 100% of your target, so you get a file that is comfortably under the limit rather than one balanced exactly on it.
When quality alone cannot get there — and for the smallest targets it cannot — the image dimensions are reduced as well, and you are told exactly what the final size became. A target that is genuinely unreachable returns the closest result we managed, clearly labelled, rather than a silent failure or an oversized file.
Frequently asked questions
Will a passport photo still be accepted at 50KB?
Yes — 50 KB is comfortable for a correctly cropped headshot, and it is the limit most identity systems were designed around. Crop to the required dimensions first and compress afterwards, so none of the budget is wasted on background you are about to remove.
Should I resize before compressing?
If the form specifies pixel dimensions, yes — match those first. Compressing a 12 MP photo to 50 KB and then cropping throws away most of the detail you just paid to keep. Set the resize option here and both happen in a single pass.
What if my photo cannot reach the target?
You get the closest result we can produce, clearly labelled, plus a one-tap option to allow resizing so it can go further. You never get a silent failure or a file that quietly exceeds the limit. Physics applies: a 12 MP photo cannot become 20 KB at full resolution, so very small targets mean reducing the dimensions too.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The compression runs entirely inside your browser, so your files never leave your device. You can check that yourself in your browser’s Network tab, and the page keeps working with your network disconnected.
