Why 20 KB?
The signature box usually has the tightest limit on any form, and 20 KB is the usual figure. Good news: a signature compresses very well. It is black ink on white paper, not a photo, so 20 KB is plenty — it should stay sharp and easy to read. If yours will not fit, the problem is usually the picture, not the compression. A phone photo of a signature also captures the paper: shadows, texture, grey light from one side of the room. All of that costs file size, and none of it is your signature. Take the picture in even light and crop close around the ink.

What the portals actually require
These numbers come from each exam's own official notice — the actual PDF, not other websites, which often get them wrong. The link to the source and the date we checked it are shown under each table.
SSC CGL (and SSC exams on the same portal)2026
SSC no longer asks you to upload a photo. The form takes your photo live, with your camera, while you fill it in. Pointing the camera at an old photo gets the form rejected. The only image file you upload is your signature.

SSC GD Constable2026 (2027 notice expected Sept 2026 — docs/18)
GD has NO photo upload. The form takes your photo live, with your camera. Pointing the camera at an old photo gets the form rejected. The only file you upload is your signature — and the notice itself says most rejected signatures are rejected for being TOO SMALL, so do not squeeze the file below 10 KB.

SBI uses the same four uploads as IBPS: a photo, a signature, a left thumb impression, and a short declaration written by hand in English. The signature and the declaration must NOT be in capital letters.

IBPS (and bank recruitments on the same portal)2026
IBPS (the body that runs bank recruitment exams) wants FOUR separate uploads, each with its own size range: a photo, a signature, a left thumb impression, and a short declaration written by hand in English. A signature written in CAPITAL LETTERS is not accepted.

How the exact size is reached
Most tools give you a quality slider and leave you to guess. We search instead: encode, measure, adjust, repeat — usually landing within three passes and never more than eight. The result is accepted once it sits between 92% and 100% of your target, so you get a file that is comfortably under the limit rather than one balanced exactly on it.
When quality alone cannot get there — and for the smallest targets it cannot — the image dimensions are reduced as well, and you are told exactly what the final size became. A target that is genuinely unreachable returns the closest result we managed, clearly labelled, rather than a silent failure or an oversized file.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my signature look dirty or grey after compressing?
The problem is almost always in the photo, not the compression. Take the picture in even light — near a window is good, under one ceiling bulb is bad. Then crop close around the ink before compressing. A signature on clean white paper stays crisp at a few kilobytes. The same signature on a shadowy, lined page wastes most of the file on the paper.
Should I scan it or photograph it?
Scan it if you can, because a scanner gives you flat lighting and a genuinely white background, which is the single biggest factor here. A phone photograph is perfectly workable — just get the light even and fill the frame with the signature rather than the page.
My form wants a specific size in pixels as well. Does this do that?
Not by itself, and it is worth being straight about that. This page hits an exact file size in kilobytes. If your portal also demands specific pixel dimensions — 600×200 is a common one — crop to that shape first, then compress, because cropping afterwards changes the file size again and you would be back where you started.
What if my photo cannot reach the target?
You get the closest result we can produce, clearly labelled, plus a one-tap option to allow resizing so it can go further. You never get a silent failure or a file that quietly exceeds the limit. Physics applies: a 12 MP photo cannot become 20 KB at full resolution, so very small targets mean reducing the dimensions too.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The compression runs entirely inside your browser, so your files never leave your device. You can check that yourself in your browser’s Network tab, and the page keeps working with your network disconnected.
